While Mortal Kombat 4 may have 4 in the title, if you want to get technical and nerdy this is actually the fifth game in the series as there were two versions of Mortal Kombat 3. This was a massive game-changer for the series as it made some pretty radical changes to every aspect of the game. I remember at the time loving this game, but it is not as talked about as the other classic MK games today.

New Foes, Old Problems

This is the most cinematic of all the first wave of Mortal Kombat games. This time around the main villain is the Elder God Shinnok who hundreds of years ago Raiden defeated after he became obsessed with ruling the realms. He was banished to the NetherRealm, but with the aid of the sorcerer, Quan Chi he has escaped. The story of the game is the classic good vs evil, but Mortal Kombat 4 does a great job in giving each of the playable characters their own motivation for taking part in the battle. There are some fun cut scenes which admittedly have aged rather poorly, but at the time these were pretty awesome.

Changing With The Times

The most notable thing about this game is the way it is so different in terms of the art style to the MK games that came before it. Gone are the digitized actors and instead we have fighters that are made with polygons. The characters are done in 3D, but this is still very much a 2D fighting game.

It has the same attack and combo system that you would expect from a Mortal Kombat game, but it introduced weapons into the mix. These would be brought out when you pressed a certain button combo with each character. While it may look different, they managed to keep the NK gameplay style here so it is still a lot of fun to play.

For

Fatality!

Mortal Kombat 4 tried to take a more serious approach to things so gone were the friendships and babalities. Instead, each character now has two fatalities. Some of these are really brutal such as Quan Chi's leg rip and Reptile when he would eat the flesh of his opponent's face. I found the fatalities to be a lot of fun in this game, but I do wish there were more of them. Some of the fatalities can be spoiled by an overactive dynamic camera as well. I wonder what they were thinking with this? I get that it can make things more cinematic, but it does not always work.

I do not care what anyone says, Mortal Kombat 4 is a solid fighting game and a game that is a great deal of fun. If I had to pick a favorite version it would always be Mortal Kombat Gold for the Sega Dreamcast. This version of the game is much better than the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation and even PC. The reason being they were able to add in more characters to this game.

Pros:

  • I loved the direction that they took the story
  • Each character has their own CG ending
  • Some of the fatalities are super gory and fun
  • Playing against a friend is always a good time
  • It was an interesting part of MK's history

Cons:

  • The graphics have aged horribly
  • Some of the sound effects are either way too quiet or way too loud

The venerable series of Mortal Kombat games continues with Mortal Kombat 4 by Midway Games. The basic story remains intact, a story that began with the defeat of the Elder God Shinnok thousands of years in the past. He was exiled to the Netherealm at the hands of the fierce warrior Raiden. That was then, this is now: Shinnok has managed to escape from his prison of exile and with renewed menace threatens the world once again. The war has been rekindled but this time mortals can win it!

Mortal Kombat 4 contains seven new warrior-fighters and offers more than nine 3D battle arenas. The total number of characters now available numbers 17, including two hidden warriors. As in past iterations of the game, gameplay consists of selecting one of the characters and challenging either computer controlled characters or one human opponent for supremacy in the battle arena. An option to set up a team of fighters (controlled by you) to go against the CPU is also available.

Returning characters from previous games not only retain their special moves and combinations but can now use newly designed additional moves as well. Each warrior possesses a specific weapon that can be stolen, dropped or picked up. There are now five towers to climb, each progressively more difficult than the one before.

Mortal Kombat 4 supports keyboard (re-mapping is supported), game pad and joystick input and offers a tournament mode with up to four or eight character bracketing. Other modes of play include one-on-one simple clashes, two-on-two matches and three forms of endurance options. The manual provides data on special moves and fatalities for each of the in-game characters.

MK4 is of course the first addition to feature 3D rendered characters and enviroments. It's also the first time weapons are available to all characters. The controls get a tad sticky at times, however the sweet taste of victory makes up for that. Unfortunately, winning in a brutal death match doesn't make up for the lacking character selection. But I suppose being able to see fatalities for the first time in 100 percent 3D form is a sight for sore eyed MK fans who had been waiting for the transition for years. Overall MK4 does what it does best and that's kick ass, MK fans new and old will definitely love this game.
